Bernese Mountain Dogs have one of the most impressive coats in dogdom — long, dense, weather-resistant, and built for cold mountain work. The signature tri-color appearance and the sheer volume of coat make grooming a real time commitment.

About the Bernese Mountain Dog coat

Long, dense double coat with significant feathering. The dense undercoat is insulating; the long outer coat is weather-resistant. The famous black, white, and rust tri-color appears across both layers.

Common skin and coat issues in Bernese Mountain Dogs

  • Atopic dermatitis
  • Hot spots (long damp coat against skin)
  • Histiocytic sarcoma (breed-predisposed cancer; not skin but relevant)
  • Sun-sensitive nose in some lines

Berners need significant grooming time but moderate bath frequency — every 6-8 weeks. The key is thorough brushing to prevent the mats that develop in the long feathering, plus complete drying after baths so the dense undercoat doesn't trap moisture against the skin.

Bathing tips for Bernese Mountain Dogs

  • Brush thoroughly before bath — Berner coat mats easily
  • Use a high-velocity dryer or extensive towel-drying
  • Check feathering for tangles daily
  • Don't shave — like other double coats, ruins the insulation system
  • In summer humidity, ensure complete drying after baths

Common questions about Bernese Mountain Dog bath care

How much time does Berner grooming actually take?

About 20-30 minutes per week of brushing for maintenance; more during shedding seasons. Plus the regular bath (6-8 weeks). Less than a Poodle but more than a Lab.

My Berner gets hot spots in summer. Why?

Damp coat against skin in humid weather. After any wet activity (swimming, rain, baths), dry the coat completely — including down to skin in the dense areas. Helps a lot.

Can I trim the Berner coat short for summer?

No. Same reason as Huskies and other double coats. Trimming would damage the insulation and the coat may not grow back correctly. Brush more, bathe less, dry completely.
