Hemp seed oil has become a popular ingredient in pet care over the last five years. Most of the buzz around it is overblown — and some of it is actively misleading. Hemp seed oil contains no CBD, no THC, and won’t have any pharmacological effect on your dog.
But for one specific use case — supporting a dry, dull, or thinning coat — it genuinely works. Here’s what’s actually going on, and why we built it into our Hemp Oil-Rosemary Shampoo.
What hemp seed oil actually is
It’s cold-pressed oil from the seeds of cannabis sativa. Nothing else. The seeds themselves contain no cannabinoids. The oil is composed almost entirely of:
- Omega-3 fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid) — supports the skin barrier
- Omega-6 fatty acids (linoleic acid + gamma-linolenic acid) — supports keratin production in hair
- Vitamin E — antioxidant that helps preserve the oil itself in the bottle
The ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 in hemp oil (roughly 1:3) is closer to what dogs need biologically than most other plant oils. This is the real reason it’s worth including in a coat-care formula — not the marketing-grade claims about “hemp wellness.”
When a dog actually needs this
Three coat conditions respond well to hemp oil topically:
- Dry, brittle coats — often seen in working dogs, outdoor breeds, or older dogs whose oil production has slowed.
- Dull coats that look like they should shine but don’t — usually a sign of seasonal change or nutritional shift.
- Thinning patches that aren’t a skin condition — supports new growth around mild bald spots from shedding or stress.
For dogs with healthy, glossy coats, our Avocado-Lavender or Coconut-Peppermint will be a better fit. Hemp Oil-Rosemary is specifically for coats that need restoration.
Why we added rosemary
Rosemary oil (Rosmarinus Officinalis) does two things:
- Stimulates the scalp. Increases blood flow to hair follicles, supporting new growth (studied in human hair-loss research with positive results).
- Natural antioxidant. Helps preserve the hemp oil in the bottle and on the coat.
It also smells great. Earthy, herbal, not floral. Most dogs (and most humans) prefer it to lavender-heavy formulas if the strong smell of lavender isn’t their thing.
What’s in the formula
Water and aloe vera leaf juice (the base), mild glucoside surfactants from corn and coconut (the cleaning), cold-pressed hemp seed oil and rosemary essential oil (the actives), plus natural preservatives (potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, citric acid).
No parabens. No phthalates. No synthetic fragrances. No artificial dyes.
How to use
Wash every two to four weeks. For dogs with severe dryness or thinning, twice weekly for the first month, then once weekly.
Wet the coat thoroughly. Work a quarter-sized dollop into a lather from neck to tail. Let it sit on the coat for two to three minutes — this is important; it gives the oils time to penetrate — before rinsing. Towel dry and brush once dry.
What it won’t do
Hemp oil isn’t a cure for medical skin conditions. If your dog has hot spots, infection, persistent itching, or hair loss with no clear cause, see a vet. Topical hemp oil supports a healthy coat — it doesn’t treat disease.
What’s not in it
No CBD. No THC. No psychoactive compounds. Hemp seed oil is from the seeds only — none of the plant’s other parts make it into our formula.
