If you’ve ever stood in the dog-shampoo aisle reading the labels on “sensitive skin” formulas, you’ve probably noticed something off. The bottle says hypoallergenic. The back label tells a different story: heavy fragrance, harsh surfactants, mystery preservatives, and a small drop of oatmeal somewhere near the bottom for marketing’s sake.
We started Pethoven because our own dogs were the ones with itchy, recurring skin issues, and we wanted something gentle we’d happily use weekly. The result is our Avocado-Lavender Shampoo — built specifically for sensitive skin.
What sensitive skin actually means
Vets use the term broadly to describe dogs whose skin reacts to common shampoo ingredients. It shows up as:
- Redness or hot spots that flare after baths
- Recurring itchy patches with no clear allergen
- Dry, flaky skin that returns within a few days of washing
- A coat that looks dull regardless of how often you brush
The root cause is often the same: shampoos that strip the skin’s natural oil layer, leaving the barrier dysfunctional and reactive. The “fix” usually comes in two forms — harsher medicated shampoo (which can worsen things long-term) or premium “hypoallergenic” formulas that often differ from regular shampoo only in price.
What’s in our formula
Our Avocado-Lavender uses six functional ingredients, all printed on the bottle.
Cold-pressed avocado oil (Persea Gratissima) is rich in oleic acid and vitamin E. Both support the skin barrier and ease dry patches.
Lavender essential oil (Lavandula Hybrida) calms irritated skin, and most dogs visibly relax during the lather.
Aloe vera leaf juice (Aloe Barbadensis) is the second-largest ingredient by volume. It is well-studied for soothing inflammation and dries clean without residue.
Coconut oil (Cocos Nucifera) adds moisture and mild antimicrobial support.
For the actual cleaning, we use mild glucoside surfactants derived from corn and coconut, plus a COSMOS-certified sodium lauryl sulfate. This combination cleans effectively without aggressive degreasing — the most common cause of rebound itching after a bath.
How to use it
For most coats, every three to four weeks. For allergy-prone or itchy dogs, weekly use is safe — the formula is gentle enough not to strip natural oils with frequent washing.
Wet the coat thoroughly. A quarter-sized dollop is enough for a medium dog. Work it into a lather from neck to tail, avoiding the eyes and ear canals. Rinse well; the formula rinses clean without residue. Towel dry and brush once dry.
What’s not in it
No parabens. No phthalates. No synthetic fragrances. No artificial dyes. We test on ourselves and on our own dogs — never on third-party animals.
Who it’s not for
If your dog has matted long hair, our Coconut-Peppermint formula will do more for tangling. If their coat is dry or dull, our Hemp Oil-Rosemary is built for nourishment and shine. The Avocado-Lavender is specifically for skin reactivity, not general coat care.
Hand-mixed in small batches in Tartu, Estonia. Currently shipping to NY, NJ, MA, DC, CT, and PA. $22.50 per 300ml bottle — roughly eight weeks of weekly use for a medium-size dog.
